12. Your tokota must learn to cope with the loss of something close to them; be it a prized possession or a friend/loved one.

Galaxy stood upon a hill. Behind her there was her new home, a home among humans and other “tamed” tokotas. A place full of warmth, safety and friendly faces. In front of her a vast wilderness stretched for hundreds of miles.

It tempted her. Was she missing her past? The female was aware she would not survive that long without human help. She was old, already had been rejected by wild packmates a few years ago. She should be grateful and stay here for the rest of her life. But the call of the wild murmured in her soul again. It did not even fit her reasonable and responsible nature. Galaxy felt childish, infantile, while battling her own caprice of leaving the home.

The tokota looked back once again at buildings covered with snow, the smoke coming out of the chimney. She won’t see it all once again anytime soon.

***

Tomkin joined Galaxy three days after the new moon. The once tamed tokota hunted together side by side with another wildling, enjoyed her freedom, wandered to primeval places never seen by human eye. It was not easy – sometimes they had to endure rage of the blizzard exposed in snowy plains. Sometimes they were hungry for days.

But it was challenging, exciting. Satisfying.

That was until they reached a place called Ridge of the Elders.

***

“Is it… Is it the Ridge?” Galaxy asked Tomkin, loudly inhaling chilly air after tiring march. “Are we so far north?”

“It appears so.” The brown female answered, approaching. It was quiet, the winds calmed down. They were alone.

Or were they not?

Suddenly an aurora enlighted the firmament,  yellow, rare one. It was massive, as if the black firmament had broken and let spill the brightness hidden behind it. Unnatural beams of the light lashed the ground, meandered through the darkness. The two animals hugged to each other, overwhelmed by the wondrous phenomenon.

The sounds of countless herds of caribou filled the air, their spirits evinced themselves, galloping on the aurora’s light. Then ghosts of various predators followed - an eternal dance of prey and hunter. Birds, deer, fishes and even humans – all had their representatives among the celestial ancestors.

Lastly, after the myriads of creatures that passed away, the great Aippaq appeared. In the spirit’s hands there was a tokota puppy – real, still alive, but weak. The immaterial being gently placed it on the snow’s surface. And Galaxy knew she had to take care of it. To comfort it. To help it to go through the life to the death. The pup was orphaned weeks ago, now starving and ill. Too exhausted to survive.

There was only one thing that could be done – to not let it to die alone. The adult tokota curled around the freezing body of the young one. Tomkin sat nearby, heartbroken she watched the Aippaq and aurora to disperse and disappear.

The thing Galaxy did not even notice, focused on the fading sparkle of life hold between her paws.
